Festival Internacional de Curtas 2009 do Rio de Janeiro

Under the slogan "Cinema for All", the 19th edition of Rio de Janeiro’s 2009 International Festival of Short Films presented a selection of the best national and foreign short films and showed works made in 35mm, 16mm and digital supports. In the national competition, the great winner was the film Superbarroco, which was also awarded the prize of best national short film by the young jury. In the international category, the highlight was the Portuguese short film Corrente. In the award granted by the partners of 2009 Short Film Cinema, the winners were: Olhos de Ressaca (ASCINE – RJ Award), O controle dos Zumbis (ABD&C Award), Samba de Quadra and O Anão que Virou Gigante (Porta Curtas Award, awarded through direct vote of internet users) and Sweet Karoline (Canal Brasil Award). The short films A arquitetura do corpo, Sweet Karoline, De volta ao quarto 666 and O Divino de repente won the RTP2 – Onda Curta Award, also granted by the partners of 2009 Short Film Cinema.

Recognized for its support to the national artistic production during its almost four decades of history, Álamo supported the event which took place from October 30 to November 09 and gathered national and international recent short film productions, retrospectives and parallel activities, in addition to a special program dedicated to the . For the company, the support to the festival reconfirmed its commitment to culture in Brazil in its different expressions and will continue after this event. "Our support to the Rio de Janeiro’s 2009 International Short Films Festival also includes the DVD launching in December, with a selection of the best short films featured in the festival. The idea is to distribute the material free of charge to our employees and customers in order to promote the taste for the says Mônica Costa, Álamo’s HR director.

 

 

Os Desafinados

 

Synopsis

Os Desafinados is a film that describes the history of a group of young musicians and composers who left to New York in the 60’s seeking to achieve the dream of success. Together they formed a group - Os Desafinados - and take part in Brazilian musical transgressive movement called Bossa Nova. The film gains significant importance for recalling the time of the Bossa Nova’s origins, the ideals of the time, the modernity dreams. The Brazilian political history (60’s and 70’s) is in the background of this romantic comedy filmed in the city of Rio de Janeiro and New York (USA).

O Inventor de Sonhos

Synopsis

The film shows the stay of D.João VI’s court in Brazil. It is an x-ray of the period shown through the daily routine of common people of the time and their view on the imperial court. It is the saga of a group of Brazilian inhabitants in the 19th century, during the transfer of the Portuguese imperial court to Brazilian lands, running away from the Napoleonic wars, between 1808 and 1821.

The plot is concentrated on two boys (a Brazilian native mulato) and a noblechild, son of an important Duke, who arrives with D. João. During the following thirteen years they become friends, rivals, enemies and finally friends again in adult life. The whole story is told through the eyes of some characters. Each daily event “takes a ride” in the major history events.

Synopsis

Two women, two realities. Rosa is the housewife, Arlete the maid. In a superficial daily routine of apparently opposing lives, they find themselves together in the same in drama: the loss of the control on the life of their children, youngsters starting to trace their own destinies, unaware of the risks they are subject to.

Synopsis

For a long time man carried his belongings on his shoulders. As a result of the invention of the wheel about 7 thousand years ago, civilization greatly accelerated its development. Today the world would be unthinkable without this simple and perfect object. Tudo sobre Rodas (All About Wheels) portrays the everyday life of thirteen characters who pulling, pushing or riding any vehicle, make their living on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. The film seeks to establish a relationship between the wheel movement and the instability of life itself, particularly of those who do not have permament employment and are led to use their creativity and off-hand ability to ensure survival.
