Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo

Since its first concert in 1954, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Osesp - Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo) has built a history of accomplishments, which resulted in an institution that nowadays is nationally and internationally recognised for its quality and excellence. Osesp is currently an inseparable part of the state culture, an agent of transformations and creator of a new paradigm in concert music and cultural management in our country.

Recently indicated by British magazine Gramophone as “one of the world three emerging orchestras, well worth paying attention to”, Osesp develops a continued work to expand the Brazilian musical culture, and will be supported by Álamo sponsorship throughout 2010.

Modinhas Cariocas – A música na corte de D. João VI - 2008

Under musical direction of Marcelo Fagerlande (who also plays the harpsichord)

João VI was recorded in UFRJ’s Music School and its repertoire included the modinheiros, persons who sing or write the popular songs called modinhas and who emerged in early 19th century. Joaquim Manoel da Camera - the greatest composer of this type of music at that time - is represented by ten modinhas, highlighting Estas lágrimas, Desde o dia em que eu nasci and Graças aos ceos. Fagerlande innovated in this work, leaving behind the traditional voice and piano model used in the classic song - and adding other instruments, as harpsichord, wire viola and wooden flute. Another reference in the subject is Gabriel Fernandes da Trindade, who authored five songs in this album. The album also includes three modinhas and the lunduLá no Largo da Sé.

The researcher and harpsichord player Marcelo Fagerlande, with musical education in Germany, Brazil and France, is the musical director of the project besides playing harpsichord. The instrumentalists Luciana Costa e Silva, Marcelo Coutinho, Marcus Ferrer and Paulo da Matta complete the quintet. The CD is competing for the TIM award and is part of the commemorative series celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Portuguese Royal Family arrival in Brazil, launched by Rio de Janeiro’s City Hall.
